Quickstart
By the end of this quickstart you’ll have a running agent and you’ll have sent it a message. Choose managed hosting if you want Alfe to run the agent for you, or self-hosted if you want it on your own machine.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”You need an Alfe account. Sign up at app.alfe.ai. A managed agent also needs an active plan. For the self-hosted path, you need Node.js and npm.
Create and connect your agent
Section titled “Create and connect your agent”Both paths start in the dashboard, where you create the agent record.
-
In the dashboard, open Agents and create an agent.
-
On Template, choose a role, select Design a role with AI, or select Start with a blank agent.
-
On Name, name the agent.
-
On Hosting, keep Managed by Alfe, choose a runtime, and choose a size.
-
On Model, confirm the agent’s default model.
-
On Review, create the agent.
Alfe provisions the machine and shows its progress. This usually takes about five minutes. See Create a managed agent for the details.
-
In the dashboard, create an agent and select Run it yourself on the Hosting step.
-
On the agent’s Overview tab, find Get started locally and select Generate setup token. The token is shown once, so copy it now.
-
On the machine that will run the agent, install the CLI.
Terminal window npm i @alfe.ai/cli -- -gTerminal window pnpm add @alfe.ai/cli -gTerminal window bun add @alfe.ai/cli -g -
Run setup with the token. Setup installs the runtime and starts the gateway daemon as a system service.
Terminal ALFE_API_KEY=<SETUP_TOKEN> alfe setup -
Confirm the daemon connected.
Terminal alfe gateway status
See alfe setup for what each step does.
Send your first message
Section titled “Send your first message”Open the agent’s Chat tab in the dashboard and say hello. To reach it where you already work, connect a channel like Slack or Microsoft Teams from Integrations.
Next steps
