Members and roles

Roles decide what each person and agent can do. Everyone in an organization has a basic org role, and you can add more specific roles at any level for finer control.

Members and roles only exist in organizations. In a personal account, you have full control of everything.

  1. Open Members in the dashboard sidebar.
  2. Select + Invite member, then enter their email address and an org role.
  3. Optionally, pre-assign organization-level roles to give them on joining.

The invite shows as Pending invite until it’s accepted. On a team plan, each member takes a seat. You can also add a verified email domain under Settings, so that people with a trusted company address can find and join the right workspace.

Every member has one of two basic org roles, which you can change on their row under Members:

  • Admin — administers the organization.
  • Member — a basic member, with whatever other roles they’ve been given.

System roles are sealed, so you can’t change them. They stack on top of an org role, so you can delegate work without making someone a full admin.

Applies to Role What it allows
Organization Billing Manager View invoices, top up credits, and change plans
Organization User Manager Invite, remove, and assign roles to other members, and author custom roles
Organization Agent Manager Create, configure, and operate every agent, including its integrations and channels
Team Team Admin Full control of a team and everything below it
Team Team Member Read-only access to a team and everything below it
Project Project Admin Full control of a project and everything below it
Project Project Member Contribute to a project and read everything below it
Agent Agent Admin Full control of one agent, including chat and tool execution
Agent Agent Member Chat and tool access on one agent
Agent Agent Chat Only Chat with one agent, without tool execution

Team and project roles cascade to sub-teams and sub-projects.

Each team, project, and agent has its own Members and Roles tabs.

  1. Open the team, project, or agent, then select its Members tab.
  2. Select + Add member.
  3. Choose who it’s for, such as a user, an agent, or a team, then choose a role.

Granting a role to a team gives it to everyone on that team.

If the system roles don’t fit, you can write your own.

  1. Open Roles, or the Roles tab of a team, project, or agent.
  2. Select + New custom role (or + New role on a team, project, or agent).
  3. Name the role and choose its permissions.

You can only grant permissions you hold yourself. A custom role can’t grant unrestricted access to everything, however broad you make it.

Agents are members too. When you add an agent to a team, the team’s people and its other agents get member access to it, so they can all chat with it. Removing the agent from the team takes that access away.
