Choose a default model

Every agent has a default model, the one it uses when a request doesn’t name another. You confirm it when you set the agent up, and you can change it at any time without reinstalling anything.

Model choice is core agent configuration, not an integration. There’s no “connect a model provider” step.

  1. Open the agent in the dashboard.

  2. In the agent header, select the current model under Model. The Change default model dialog opens.

  3. Select a use case, then select a model from the ranked list.

The agent uses the new default going forward. Agents created from a template start on the template’s recommended model, and you can change that the same way.

The picker starts from what the agent is for rather than from a list of model names. Select a use case and the list re-ranks:

  • Everyday — a well-rounded pick for general chat and day-to-day tasks.
  • Coding — writing, refactoring, and debugging code.
  • Writing — long-form writing, drafting, and editing.
  • Deep reasoning — hard problems, planning, and math.
  • Budget — the most cost-effective options first.

Each model card helps you compare at a glance:

  • Best marks the top-ranked model for the use case you selected.
  • Recommended marks the platform’s default model.
  • $ to $$$$ is a relative price band with a plain-language hint. A model keeps its band whichever use case you select.

Administrators can limit the models available across the organization, from AI Models in the dashboard.

  1. Open AI Models and find Approved Models.

  2. Select the models you want to allow, individually or by provider.

  3. Select Save.

Once a list is saved, pickers show approved models only, and agents can only use those models. Select Remove Restrictions to allow everything again.

The Affected Agents list on the AI Models page shows agents on a model they can’t use. A listed agent can’t make model requests until you move it. Each row gives a reason, such as Not on approved list or Runtime can’t use the replacement.

Pick a new model on the row, or select Migrate All to apply each row’s suggestion.

When a model retires, Alfe names a replacement and moves you onto it:

  • Approved lists swap the retired model for its replacement.
  • Agents on the retired model move to the replacement, or to a newer model in the same family if the replacement doesn’t fit.
  • Agents that can’t move appear under Affected Agents for you to resolve.

You don’t need to act unless an agent ends up on that list.
